What Portafilter Size Do You Need: 51mm, 54mm, 58mm, or 58.4mm?
Portafilter size is set by your machine, not chosen independently — but knowing which size you have determines every basket, tamper, and bottomless portafilter you can buy afterward.
Smaller formats (51mm and similar)
Smaller portafilter sizes are common on some compact and super-automatic machines, generally with a narrower range of aftermarket parts available — a real limitation if you later want to upgrade baskets or try a bottomless portafilter.
54mm
54mm is used by several popular built-in-grinder machines, including both Breville models and the De'Longhi La Specialista Arte reviewed on this site, and has a reasonable aftermarket parts selection, including precision baskets from third-party makers.
58mm and 58.4mm
58mm (and the closely related 58.4mm "E61-style" variant used on some prosumer machines) is the most common commercial-format size, with the widest selection of aftermarket baskets, bottomless portafilters, and tampers — a factor worth considering if you expect to upgrade parts later. The Gaggia Classic Pro and Rancilio Silvia reviewed on this site both use 58mm.
Why this matters beyond the machine itself
Every tamper, basket upgrade, or bottomless portafilter you might buy later is sized to this one number — getting it right (or rather, knowing what your machine already uses) before shopping for accessories avoids buying a tamper or basket that simply does not fit.
How to find your machine's actual size
Check the manufacturer's specification page for your exact model rather than assuming — some manufacturers use different portafilter sizes across different machines in the same product line, and relying on a general impression ("Breville machines are 54mm") can be wrong for a specific model you have not verified.
Does portafilter size affect the coffee itself?
Not directly — a well-dialed-in shot at 51mm, 54mm, or 58mm can all taste excellent. The size mainly affects dose flexibility (larger baskets generally accommodate a wider dose range comfortably) and your future accessory options, not any inherent flavor advantage of one size over another.
